Western Summit announced today that the Nelson-Flanders Water Treatment Plant, completed by the Western Summit Constructors, Inc.-Black & Veatch joint-venture design-build team for the City of Longmont, CO., earned a 2006 Design-Build Excellence Award from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) in the “water over $15 million” category.
Western Summit also announced today that the Nancy Creek Pump Station Project, completed by Western Summit Constructors, Inc., with subcontractors Brown & Caldwell, T.E. Ibberson Company, and Bradshaw/Frontier-Kemper, for the City of Atlanta, GA, earned a 2006 Design-Build Excellence Award from DBIA in the “water over $15 million” category.
The awards were presented at the National DBIA Annual Conference and Awards Ceremony held recently in Nashville, TN at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center.
Winners of National Design-Build Awards Competition exemplify the principles of interdisciplinary teamwork, innovation and problem solving, which characterize design-build delivery. “The teams and projects recognized have raised the bar. They have gone far beyond achieving excellence in cost, schedule and quality. Each has gone further to stimulate innovation, optimize collaboration, and advance and improve the design and construction industry,” said Walker Lee Evey, DBIA President.
About Nelson-Flanders Water Treatment Plant
The new plant for the City of Longmont provides high-quality drinking water to meet the increased demands of a growing population and economy. The $43 million plant was designed and built not only to meet present needs but also to accommodate future development and regulatory requirements. Sharing a picturesque rural site with a 19th-century dairy farm, the 30-million-gallon-per-day water treatment facility sits in harmony with history and nature. Designed to complement the adjacent structures, the modern treatment plant resembles a historic barn while dry-chemical storage facilities model silos. The project team worked closely with the community to preserve trees and wildlife corridors, devoting special attention to provision of roosts for migratory hawks and relocation of prairie dog colonies.
About Nancy Creek Pump Station
The City of Atlanta was under a consent decree from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Georgia EPD to have a 100 mgd, 160-foot deep tunnel pump station on line and fully operational within 28 months. The main concept of the Nancy Creek Pump Station is to dewater the tunnel as quickly as possible within the constraints of the capacity of the existing R.M. Clayton Resources Center, and remove wastewater from the tunnel at a rate to maximize the available capacity of the plant. Working proactively with the City of Atlanta allowed Western Summit to beat the scheduled milestones, meet the $31 million budget, provide a quality product, and deliver it all while maintaining a safe work environment in potentially hazardous conditions.
From Terry Carlsgaard: “These two award-winning projects epitomize the dedication and teamwork needed for outstanding projects. Western Summit is very proud of each team member involved with the projects and we appreciate your hard work and commitment to success.”
About DBIA
The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) is a membership organization founded in 1993 to advocate and advance single source project delivery within the design and construction community. The design-build method of project delivery embraces architecture, engineering and construction services under a single contract, thereby re-integrating the roles of designer and constructor. DBIA members include practitioners from all project phases, plus public- and private-sector project owners. For more information, visit www.DBIA.org.
